  • body weight; body mass index
  • muscle mass; bone mass
  • body fat content (percentage)
  • body water content (percentage)
  • basal metabolic rate (BMR)

What do smart scale measure?

  • Body weight

Here everything is simple. Any scales measure weight, not only smart. However, in the case of smart devices, you can observe analysis statistics in the phone application.

Why do you need to know your weight? During diet and sports, weight management visually and quickly helps to evaluate the effectiveness of your lifestyle. Moreover, the proof of prior success with the loss of extra pounds motivates to continue the whole experiment.

How is it measured? For measuring the weight, load sensors are responsible, which are deformed under the user’s weight and provide an electrical signal to the processor. The processor converts it to the number that you see on the screen.

  • Body Mass Index (BMI)

This is a value that indicates how much a person’s weight corresponds to his height. The World Health Organization interprets the index values as follows:

  • 16 or less – severe underweight
  • 16-18,5 – underweight
  • 18.5—24.99 – the norm
  • 25-30 – pre-obesity
  • 30 or more – obesity

A simple mathematical formula that helps nutritionists make you hungry. BMI = weight / height² (kg / m²). The optimal BMI rates for different ages will differ. For children, it is necessary to control this indicator more often than for adults.

  • Muscle mass

It is the volume of all the muscles in the body. Muscles consist not only of meat but also water. The indicators will be interesting for people who cannot imagine their life without pumping up muscles and want to measure progress. The volume of muscle tissue is interesting for athletes and anyone who wants to feel good and live longer.

Why do we need to know the muscle tissue percentage? With the same weight and height, two people may look diametrically opposite. One will have an athletic figure, and the other will look like a pillow.

How is it measured? Each manufacturer of smart scales has its own formulas that they do not disclose. For the base, the difference between body weight and body fat is taken.

  • The total percentage of body fat

One of the three key parameters for athletes and people leading an active lifestyle. We know how high fat percentage is, and we set the goal of losing weight. However, not all fat is unnecessary. Scales work with the percentage of underskin fat, which accounts for about 80% of the total fat tissue of the body.

Why do we need to know the fat percentage? This indicator for athletes is even more important than what the arrow of weights shows. If you have an understanding of how much underskin fat you have, then you decrease it from your body weight and get muscle mass. For example, if after two months of diet or training you have lost 6 kg. Then it is important that at least 5-5.5 kg of them should be fat. Here the scales will assist us.

How is it measured? Diagnostic scales determine the percentage of body fat in terms of tissue resistance: fat is more resistant.

  • Visceral fat

A very important health indicator. This is fat inside our body that protects our internal organs from damage, and also serves as a reserve energy source. A healthy norm extends up to 10-15% of total body fat. And a significant excess of this indicator may cause the diseases of the cardiovascular system, high blood pressure and the development of type 2 diabetes.

Why do we need to know the visceral fat percentage? Visceral fat is associated with the sign of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease. It blocks blood flow to the internal organs, which causes shortness of breath and fatigue. Harm to health is caused not so much by underskin, as by visceral fat. It is important to reduce its portion in the body.

How is it measured? As in the previous paragraph – through the resistance of tissues and the subsequent calculation of the medical metrics.

  • The water percentage in the body

The least stable parameter, varying during the day many times. Since it affects the resistance of the body. The indicators obtained from the remaining indicators depend partly on the current water percentage. The human body contains 50–75% of water, the balance of which in the body is mobile. A person sweats, drinks breathes, takes food, visits the toilet, which leads to a change in the volume of fluid in the body.

Why do we need to count the water? This is useful for dieters and fitness fanatics. The first take the water balance change for real weight loss. The latter, on the contrary, take water and cannot calculate how much muscle mass they have added. The presence of real numbers allows us to evaluate reality and adjust the approach.

How is it measured? Since the water in the body conducts electricity, the bio-impedance method well reveals its volume.

  • Skeletal muscles percentage

It is the total dry mass of muscles attached to the skeleton. This will allow you to find out whether you have such a “wide bone” as you previously thought. Skeletal muscles are called so because they are attached to the skeleton and together with it form the musculoskeletal system. On average, their weight is about 40% of the total body weight of a person. A trained athlete will have a higher percentage.

Why do we need to know about these muscles? Musculoskeletal mass is one of the indicators of human health, it can be used to judge endurance and physical development.

How is it measured? Diagnostic scales calculate the percentage of skeletal muscles using their own algorithms, based on data from the bio-impedance meter.

  • Bone mass

This is not the same as the weight of the entire skeleton. The bone tissue of an adult living person is 60–70% composed of mineral components and 30–40% of organic matter. The skeleton of an adult weighs from 7 to 10 kilograms. Mineral bone mass averages 2–3 kg for women and 2.6–3.6 kg for men.

Why do you need to know about your bone mass? Bones slowly degrade with age. For adults (and women in particular), osteoporosis is frequent: a disease in which more bone tissue is destroyed than it is created. Fortunately, it is easy to prevent the problem – it is enough to keep an active lifestyle, and this will affect the increase or maintenance of bone mass. Strong muscles connect with the thickness and strength of bones.

How is it measured? According to the formulas and known statistics of age groups.

  • Basal Metabolism Level (BMR)

It is the number of calories (kcal) that your body needs to maintain normal vital activity. Including heartbeat and breathing. It means how many calories you can spend without doing anything for 24 hours. The indicator is actively used when choosing a personal diet or nutrition/workout to calculate the required calorie deficit/excess. Basal metabolism is the minimum number of calories to maintain the body at rest.

Why do I need this? The higher the metabolic rate, the faster the calories are burned and, accordingly, fat. The increase in muscle mass, sports, active life can significantly accelerate this process.

How is it measured? Using a standard equation based on height, weight, age and sex, adjusted for the percentage of muscle mass.

  • Metabolic (biological) age

The age to which your current metabolism corresponds. The indicator is closely related to the previous one. The scale of indicators lies in the range of 12-90 years.

  • Body type

Based on the total body fat percentage and muscle mass, you are assigned a value from 1 to 9. Each of which corresponds to a specific combination of fat and muscle. For example, a value of 1 corresponds to a high fat content and a low muscle mass. 5 – an average indicator of fat and muscles. And 9 – a low fat percentage and a high percentage of muscles.

The doctor or the smart scale?

There is no doubt, that smart scales will provide you with enough information. So that you can, relying on them in every function, change your diet, the amount of physical activity and life in general for the better. But do not take the device as a qualified doctor: always listen first to yourself and to objective medical opinion.

Preceding questions about accuracy, we immediately answer. It is important to understand that, like any other devices, smart scales can have their own error. In the end, we are not talking about the medical laboratory. Comparing different scales with each other and finding out which “more correctly” is also not quite true – after all, they can use different methods to calculate the listed parameters.

The only accuracy that you can truly (and should) demand from the scales is the accuracy of indicators under equal usage conditions. That is if the scales are of the same place, and you are trying to weigh in the same position and breathe the same way. Then your indicators, with a difference of one minute, should not differ significantly. A slight lag is possible only during the calibration phase. Therefore, it is worthwhile to study how and what this or that model estimates before making a purchase.

Doctor or the scale

You can calculate some indicators yourself: for example, the same BMI or muscle mass and metabolic rate. Scales, in addition to the obvious advantages in the speed of these calculations, have another plus. They show trends, graphs of changes in certain indicators of the body in the app.

If these changes are undesirable, as is the case with a decrease in bone mass, the user will be able to quickly understand this. And therefore, quickly find out the reasons for the doctors. So the choice between scales and doctors is not worth it. Perfectly, they should be present, but with a shift in the balance towards the scales.

Please note that there are some contraindications for using smart scales with bioimpedance. Since the scales allow a small charge of current to assess the body, they are unfortunately not allowed to use by people with a pacemaker. There are also some features that should be taken into account for pregnant women – this is the case when it is better to first consult with your doctor.

  • When to weigh and how regularly?

To achieve the desired result, the regularity of weighing is no less important than what you do or eat. Weigh yourself not only every day but around the same time. The best time or this is immediately after waking up or after breakfast.

There is no need to do the whole analysis more than 1-2 times a month. Due to the direct effect of the water balance on the body resistance, such a measurement is better to do in the evening. At this time of the day, our body is not dehydrated, unlike in the morning. Otherwise, you will get not accurate results, that will be far from real.

  • How does all data get into the system?

Like many other modern gadgets, smart scales work in tandem with mobile devices: smartphones. Some people have online interfaces and PC applications, but mobile applications are more common.

The data is stored in the “cloud” of the scale manufacturer, and the whole array is processed there. To send it there, the device is connected to the Internet. There are two ways to do this: synchronize the scales with a mobile gadget, or directly connect to your home wireless network. In the first case, the standard Bluetooth is used, the second – Wi-Fi.

When connected via Bluetooth smartphone will have to get before each weighing. This can be considered an inconvenience, but it is a discussion point. When the user sees all the data each time, he will not be able to ignore or not notice the changes in his body. Awareness is an absolute advantage for diet and weight maintenance.

  • Where to place scales?

The best place is on a flat and hard surface. Any part of the room will be suitable. But it is better to choose a place where the scales can be stored permanently. So you will not have to hide it or moved it away. The unmovable position of the device will provide you with the correct results from measurement to measurement.

It is also essential that the scales are always visible. Thus, always remind that you need to weigh. Next to the fridge or a large mirror is a perfect position.

Customers’ comments

The smart scale is equipment that measures physiological parameters and store data either on the owner’s smartphone or on the server. For the user, this is convenient in that measurements are stored in one place. Besides, compatibility with various sports programs allows you to synchronize with a dozen sports services, such as Apple Health, Google Fit, Runtastic, myFitnesPal, etc.

How to distinguish smart scales from the ordinary ones? The first determine not only weight but can carry out a number of additional measurements. Such as body mass index, the percentage of fat, muscle and bone tissue. In addition, smart scales are synchronized with the phone, and some models are able to automatically distinguish between users.

Great product! I like Garmin equipment. Usually, I have no complaints about the quality of the articles and materials. Everything is expensive, stylish and sound. The first setup is required to connect the scales to the Internet, and the serial number is attached to your account. After that, the latest weighing is automatically transferred to your Garmin Connect account. If you have difficulty in using the routers and other computer stuff – better not buy them, do not spoil your mood.

Disadvantages: If you experience difficulties in communicating with routers and other computer stuff – better not buy them, do not spoil your mood.

I find Garmin smart scale good reliable piece of equipment. The previous scales of another company simply fell apart after a small fall, although they were in the box, but they kept the working functionality. I connected to the WF network right away without any problems, although some people had concerns with it. Everything set up and everything works as it should. Garmin is on top (yes, not cheap, but you understand what you are paying for). Emotions are only positive.

Advantages: The quality of materials, functionality.
Disadvantages: Not yet discovered

I bought the smart scale recently and I’m fully satisfied with my purchase. Connected to my account and to WiFi using the native Garmin Connect app in a couple of minutes. The only problem was that I had 10 minutes spent on connecting the second user of the scales (you need to send an invitation). Now they themselves recognize the one who is weighed and then transmit the result via WiFi to the cloud and from there to the app.

Advantages: Measure everything quickly, show informative
Disadvantages: If the user is not recognized, then only show the weight
